Alcohol is already an important component of Chilean culture. It seems pretty common for South American countries to have hotspots in drinking loads of alcohol. It may not be easily identifiable, but one place where drinking and going to pubs has had a rich history is located just right in the middle of Santiago, the La Piojera is already a landmark in the Santiago night life.
The term "La Piojera" in reference to this pub was coined by no other than former Chilean President Arturo Alessandri when he was invited to the pub by its owners in 1922. Upon entering the pub, the former President left immediately after exclaiming that he was led to a place full of fleas. Instead, you will be confronted by walls full of graffiti, dozens of people cramped in there and drinking booze, and some singing once in a while. No, this is not about Chilean aesthetics. This is about Chilean culture silently calling you through this little space. And what is going to the La Piojera without drinking? The best drink in the table has to be the terremoto ("earthquake"). This dangerous ice cream float is based on sweet wine, pineapple ice cream, and a secret black liquor that will shock your head upon drinking it. The earthquake is that dangerous! Just you wait for the aftershocks after. La Piojera is not fit for everyone to enter, but if you have the guts, do drop by and experience a genuine component of Chilean culture. You can talk about...
