As the chief executive of the land, government leaders almost always has office in one of the grander buildings and structures in their countries. Palaces, castles, mansions, and other elaborate structures are often the venue where these leaders do their work. They are always grandiose, historic, and iconic. You can also almost always expect that a certain part of these palaces are open to the public for viewing.

In Chile, that palace will have to be the La Moneda Palace, simply known as the La Moneda. Located in downtown Santiago, working on the palace started in 1784 under the architectural direction of Joaquin Toesca y Ricci. The construction was significantly delayed during the succeeding 15 years, after which Toesca died without seeing his completed work. The palace was originally established as a colonial mint for the Spanish colonial government.

It was not until way after Chilean independence, in 1845, when Chilean President Manuel Bulnes established the La Moneda as the primary presidential residence. The palace's status as the presidential residence lasted until 1958 but it remained as the seat of Chile's president. In 1973, extensive damage was made to the palace during the Chilean coup d'etat, but it was already rehabilitated back to its old grandeur.

These days, the inner courtyards of the La Moneda Palace can already been entered and is open for most of the day, seven days a week. One can also be part of the free guided tours that will take you around the palace. However, these free guided visits have to be settled weeks in advance. Inside it, there is even a cultural center with a lot of exhibitions and even a handicrafts store for those in need of some souvenirs. With the proximity of nearby historic sites, visiting the La Moneda Palace is a core activity for any newcomer to Santiago.
