Abortion is a serious and controversial issue wherever you go around the world. Whether it be in liberalized societies like that in Europe or more conservative ones like in Southeast Asia, the issue of abortion is still a delicate an issue that has to be handled with care, unless you want to destabilize society altogether. Chile is no different from this issue, especially now that it is in the limelight once more.
Therapeutic abortion used to be legalized by the Health Code of Chile since 1935, until this was abolished in 1989. The reasoning behind this abolition is that, according to lawmakers, advances in medicine and healthcare have made it quite easier to deal with dangerous pregnancies. Back then, any pregnant woman whose life is in danger could ask for an abortion by getting permission from her physicians. Today, the issue of therapeutic abortion is brought up once more after conservative UDI Senator Evelyn Matthei made a proposal to decriminalize therapeutic abortion. This has stirred up quite a controversy that Matthei's own party had to threaten her for supposedly going against their party stand on the issue. In the same threat, they made the suggestion that they will cancel Matthei's party membership if she decides to push through with the proposal. Matthei responded by saying that she already anticipated the conservative opposition to her proposal, but added that this is one measure that she believed to be important for the health of many women across the country. Many legislative proposals have already been introduced throughout the years in order to legalize abortion in certain situations, but this is the first time that such a legislation has been proposed by a member of the right-wing Independent Democratic Union (UDI), which is against abortion no matter what the conditions are. Conservatives have suggested that this move may open the floodgates for proposals to allow full abortion of all kinds, as well as certain forms of euthanasia.
