Chile Expat and Travel ArticlesChile to offer government-owned property and projects to foreign investors
Economic protectionism does not really have much room in today's world. It has been understood by many developing-market governments that they do need foreign investors in order to prop up their economy, which may sometimes mean putting up their properties available for foreign investors to choose from. This is the case for Chile, whose Ministry of National Property recently offered real estate properties, tourism, and wind energy initiatives available for foreign investors to invest on. Nine different locations are involved in the offer, including sites located in Cabo de Hornos, Antofagasta, Taltal, Sierra Gorda, Mejillones, Iquique, Villa O'Higgins (Aysén) and Torres del Paine. The bidding process for the wind concessions in Taltal and Sierra Gorda will begin this coming November, with another set of six other sites still being studied by the Ministry of Energy. Once the study is completed, it is estimated that they will also be put for bidding by 2011. Each of these concessions will last for a period of 25 years. Some of the concessions, like the Isla Santa Maria (Antofagasta), Río Mosco (Aysén), and Torres del Paine (Magallanes), are under protected status, which means the winners of the bidding may have to ensure that these sites are protected, as indicated in their respective concession contracts. This goes alongside the concessions' goal of developing these areas in order to make sure that tourist infrastructure will be available to accommodate the regions' ever-increasing tourist arrivals. For example, the concession in Cape Horn contains 160,000 hectares of land available for hotel and retail development. The area, where Tierra del Fuego could be found, receives some 300,000 tourists from around the world every year. In any case, I personally believe that this is a good move for the Chilean government. It can definitely benefit from the investments pouring in from foreign nations, as well as their expertise in handling such projects. You can talk about...
