Chile Expat and Travel ArticlesLearning More About Neruda and Mistral
If there's anything in Chilean culture that I have to give so much applause to, it would be the country's literary scene, which is one of the most prominent, if not the most prominent, in the entire South American continent. Most famous contributions to Chilean literature have come from no less than the country's two Nobel Prize winners, Pablo Neruda and Gabriela Mistral.
Pablo Neruda are widely available, with most of his poetic works already translated to English from Spanish. His notable collection ranged from erotic love poems to works that were heavily charged with politicizing. He became even more famous when he become a fugitive after the fall of communism in Chile. After winning the Nobel, he then returned to his home country, where he was invited to read some of his works in front of 70,000 people. Gabriela Mistral (Lucila de María del Perpetuo Socorro Godoy Alcayaga in real life) is the author whose works are a little more difficult to find. In 1945, he received the Nobel Prize in literature for her major contributions in shaping Latin American identity in the pre-war world. Her poems' themes centered on topics like nature, betrayal, love, travel, and Latin American identity. She also became a world-renowned educator. These two poets are so famous among literature enthusiasts that their homes and birth places have become museums and important sites for literary pilgrims who come over to Chile to see and learn more about these authors' origins. They might have moved on and died already, but it is obvious that their legacy will be forever etched not only among Chileans , but also in the global literary scene in general. It must have been a great time for Chile then, back in the twentieth century, to have produced two such remarkably known poets. These are the real children of Chile, children that every local should strive to become--maybe not exactly as poets, but as Chileans who have their country in their plans to do well in this world.
